About Thors Ghyll

Set in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and tucked away down a private road, this semi-detached, stone built property enjoys an idyllic location with lovely rural views. The particularly spacious living accommodation makes it ideal for families and has been carefully decorated and appointed throughout. There are 5 bedrooms, two of which can be super kingsize or twin beds. Should you wish to have it made up as a super kingsize, then enjoy snuggling in to a emperor duvet on those chilly winter nights. The master bedroom also boasts a walk-in wardrobe.

It is conveniently placed for those wishing to walk, cycle or tour in stunning scenery. Just a couple of miles from Grassington which enjoys a variety of country shops, pubs, restaurants and tea rooms with cuisine ranging from good pub grub to fine dining. Grassington plays host to the Arts Festival in summer and attracts some famous artists. In the winter, it holds the Dickensian Festival which reflects bygone times and really gets you into the festive spirit. The spa town of Harrogate is just 20 minutes away. Here you will find both high street and high end shopping together with the Valley Gardens, Betty's Tea Rooms (a must for afternoon tea), and a wide selection of pubs, restaurants and bars.

Walking is as varied as the terrain with easy, riverside walks along the River Wharfe or more strenuous hill walking. If it's relaxation you prefer, then why not take a picnic down by the river, or sit in the garden and enjoy the view. Shop and restaurant 2 miles, pub 800 yards.

Situated in the beautiful village of Hebden

Set in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and tucked away down a private road, this semi-detached, stone built property enjoys an idyllic location with lovely rural views.

Amenities

Heating - Central heating throughout the colder months is set to auto and comes on at 06.00 for 4 hours and again at 16.00 for 6 hours. The control for the CH and hot water is in the ground floor boiler cupboard. Standard controls (on/off/all day/auto/hour boost). Your first batch of fire lighters, kindling, coal and logs are provided. Further supplies are available from Grassington Spar or Threshfield service station/Spar.

Rubbish and Recycling - There are 2 bins in the kitchen, one for general rubbish and the 2nd for recycling (Plastic, glass, tins and cardboard/paper). Please bag recycling and general rubbish (black bags below the sink) and place the recycling in the blue bin and the general rubbish in the green bin in the car park.

Both TVs are Smart TV's with Freesat. Appliance and TV instructions are found in the basket on top of the fridge. The complimentary welcome pack of provisions is to get you started.

Safety - There is a fire safety card, fire extinguisher and fire blanket in the kitchen. The height of the doorway between the sitting room and sun room is a little low, please mind your head.

The Loft can be chilly at times in winter, particularly overnight. There are fan heaters available for guest use and a plug in oil heater which boosts the temperature very quickly. Cosy quilts will be on the beds and extra blankets are available.

Toddlers/Babies - A high chair and a folding cot are stored in the loft cupboard, along with a stair safety gate for the bottom of the ground to first floor stairs.

The high chair is for 9 months and upwards. Bear in mind cot bedding requirements vary considerably, this particular item is not provided by the house.

Dining table - We have discovered, the hard way, that the dining room table stains quite easily. The table cloths are available to use at your discretion.

Outside - We have a small stream in the back garden which throughout the majority of the year is no more than a trickle. However, during periods of heavy rainfall the stream does rise and caution should be taken where toddlers are concerned.

There is a BBQ in the garage for guest use. A starter pack of charcoal and lighters is provided. Please enjoy the garden furniture when it's pleasant to sit out. There are cushions for the chairs, please bring them in at night or if rain threatens and put the brolly cover on. They are a devil to dry once wet.

The garage is a great retreat for both the younger ones and the big kids amongst us (2 halogen heaters are in place for the colder days and nights).

The pool table operates off old 10 pence pieces stored in the garage. Cues and chalk are provided.

The table tennis table and the table football can be easily moved outside weather permitting or played in the garage. Bats and balls are provided. Lighting for the darts is operated from above the oche. Darts are provided.

Remove the punch bag if its in the way.

All garage doors have locks and keys.

In addition to the American fridge/freezer in the house, a further fridge and chest freezer are available for your use in the garage if required.

Horses and sheep are often grazing in the field so normally a good idea to keep the gate closed.

Throughout the Winter months, frost and/or snow will make vehicular access to and from Thors Ghyll a little tricky. Frost can usually be overcome with the use of grit (stored in the garage or available from Threshfield service station in winter months) and whilst a snow flurry won`t cause major problems to most 4x4 vehicles, we tend to take the safe option and park in the village. A convenient bridge crosses the stream adjacent to Beckside (Thors Ghyll's neighbour) and meanders up the hill to the village where roadside parking is available close to the kissing gate' at the top of the path.

The closest shops are in Grassington which is a 5 minute drive from Thors Ghyll. Here you will find a small but useful for the essentials Spar, Walkers Bakery, a newsagent, Relish Deli plus all the usual outlets associated with a small town.

A larger Spar is found in Threshfield no more than a further 2 minute drive out of Grassington towards Skipton.

Larger supermarkets are found in Skipton some 12 miles from Hebden (Tesco, Morrisons and Aldi) There is an M&S food store along with a fine selection of bakeries, pie shops and wine shops within the town centre.

Closest Petrol Station - Texaco at Threshfield (same site as the Threshfield Spar). 3 miles from Hebden.

Doctors - Grassington Medical Centre, 9 Station Road, Grassington BD235LS - 01756 752313 - 2 miles from Hebden.

Nearest A&E hospital - Airedale GH, Skipton Road, Keighley BD20 6TD - 01535 652511 - 18 miles and 30 mins from Hebden.

The Yorkshire Dales and in particular Wharfedale possess some of the most scenic walks in the UK

From mini pub to pub hops, to yomps across peaks and valleys, the Dales have it all and there are dozens and dozens to choose from. We won`t try and tell you where to start your walks from, how far to go, how high to climb etc. that will be entirely up to yourselves, but to help you along the way, there are books and guides in the house to give you inspiration. For a starter however, to give you a feel for the area, drop down to the River Wharfe from Hebden and either cross the swing bridge and head downstream to Burnsall (35 mins in total) or stay on this side of the river and walk upstream to Grassington (45 mins in total). Both very easy flat walks. For the more energetic walkers, head for the north Dales for the higher hills, or for the seasoned ramblers, the 3 peaks are a must.

RELAX IN BEAUTIFUL SURROUNDINGS

What Our Fantastic Clients Say

"Just finished a family New Year break at Thors Ghyll. Had a fabulous time at this wonderful comfy cottage. Really was a home from home with plenty of room for all the family and very well equipped. The owners really have thought of everything and the lovely Christmas decorations were a great touch. Great walks to both Grassington and Burnsall from the doorstep. Thanks for a memorable break!"

"The cottage exceeded our expectations and provided a really comfortable and spacious stay for our family Christmas, and the added treats of the welcome pack, Christmas tree and decorations made this a very special place. Well equipped kitchen, and the games room was an added bonus. Great location, with lots of different walks straight from the door, and a great pub less than 10 minutes walk away in the village. Highly recommend."

"Thors Ghyll is set in a near perfect location with lovely views down the valley. The local tea rooms are a joy and sunday roast at the Clarendon is highly recommended. Thors Ghyll itself has everything we required: 5 good sized bedrooms, a well appointed kitchen & excellent living space. It came with a high chair, cot and toys for younger children. We did not get a chance to enjoy the garden and the play room in the garage. This is 5 star accommodation."

See & Do

Hebden

Originally a lead mining village which has developed into the perfect base from which to explore the Dales, The Clarendon pub is a must for a quality pint, good food, a lovely fire in winter and south facing outside seating in summer. And as if the Clarendon isn't enough in such a small village, we have The Old School Tea Room serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea (wholesome, hearty with good veggie options...don't be in a rush, it's not MacDonalds). Try and make an effort to visit at least once during your stay.

Burnsall (2 miles from Hebden)

Burnsall

The quintessential Dales village, much visited and photographed. Down river from Hebden (10 mins drive, 35 mins walk), Burnsall is blessed with the family run Red Lion Coaching Inn, where quality fayre can be sought in the bar area, snug or restaurant. Within a stone's throw of the river Wharfe, two cafes compete for visitor and local trade, leaving the splendid Fell hotel overlooking the village to concentrate on catering for visitors perhaps used to the finer aspects of life. Burnsall's popularity with day trippers over summer weekends might not suit those in search of peace and tranquillity. The Famous Burnsall Feast Sports is a great family day out in late August boasting one of the steepest fell races in the country.

Grassington (1.5 miles from Hebden)

Grassington

Probably the most recognisable small town within the Dales. Three pubs with rooms and a fine dining restaurant/hotel, accompany a number of tea rooms and cafes within the picture postcard village. The Black Horse Hotel serves excellent pub food and the Grassington House hotel restaurant, No.5, provides top of the range cuisine. For those preferring more of a Tea Room atmosphere, The Retreat heads a number of quality alternatives. Tricky to park in the village square but there is plenty of space in the National Park car park (Hebden side of Grassington). Grassington hosts a 2 week summer festival attracting a number of notable acts which may or may not be of interest and two weekends of Dickensian festivities leading up to Christmas.

Linton (2.6 miles from Hebden)

Linton

The Fountaine Inn overlooks the village green and provides very good food and beer. Linton has won numerous prettiest village awards over the years and must be visited with Linton Falls, half a mile over the hill on the river Wharfe, where during periods of heavy rainfall the river thunders through a series of spectacular rock formations.

North Wharfedale Villages

These include Kettlewell, Buckden, Starbotton, Arncliffe and Litton. All are worth a visit with particular reference to Kettlewell and its 3 pubs, with the Kings Head leading the way for food and the Falcon at Arncliffe, one of only a handful of pubs who still serve beer from jugs.

arncliffe-640x447

Malham (13 miles from Hebden)

Malham

Superb walking around Malham Cove and Goredale Scar but also a beautiful village in itself with 2 good pubs and an excellent tourist information centre.

Skipton (12 miles from Hebden)

Skipton

The Gateway to the Dales and recently judged as the happiest town in the UK. Market days attract a good number of visitors on Saturdays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays which in summer months creates a few parking headaches but nothing insurmountable (go early). Skipton has a little something for everyone including excellent dining (Le Bistro, Elsworths Kitchen, Le Caveau, Alexanders), quality traditional pubs (Wooly Sheep, The Castle, Narrow Boat), an increasing number of micro pubs and plenty of visitor attractions including Skipton castle, Leeds Liverpool canal and the award winning High Street.

There is a Leisure centre and swimming pool set within the impressive Aireville Park which also offers skate park, zip wire, playground, pitch and putt, tennis courts and tree tops high rope course. At the same side of town Keelham Farm Shop offers a super range of locally sourced food, butcher, bakery, wine shop and café. Fabulous but gets very busy.

Harrogate (24 miles east of Hebden)

Harrogate

A well-to-do Spa town offering great shopping, dining (Drum and Monkey, Betty`s Tea Rooms, The Ivy), a quaint theatre and 5 screens at the Everyman cinema. Take the scenic route back to Hebden via Pateley Bridge and call in at the "Oldest Sweet Shop in the World" to stock up.

bettys-harrogate-543x395

York (42 miles from Hebden)

York

Straddling the river Ouse, York offers everything for a day visit including the amazing Minster, numerous museums, great restaurants (Skosh on Micklegate and The Star in the City are 2 of our favourites), a river cruise and the general hustle and bustle of the City centre. An early start is recommended to pack everything in. And should you be into your horse racing, the finest course in the north of England is to found in York where there are meetings in May, June, July, August, September and October.

Restaurants & Pubs

Devonshire Arms, Bolton Abbey (8 miles, 20 minutes) - A choice of fine dining in the hotel's Burlington restaurant or less formal food served in the bistro. Both very good.

The Angel at Hetton (8 miles from Hebden just off the Skipton Road) - the original Gastro pub but now offering first class restaurant dining and top end bar food. The Angel changed hands in September 2018 and under their new chef is aiming for the top.
